๐Ÿ”ข Syllable Counter

Count the syllables in a word, sentence or poem, line by line. Great for haiku, lyrics and homework.

How the syllable counter works

Common words are looked up in the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, which lists how each word is spoken, so the count follows real pronunciation. For words not in the dictionary the tool estimates by counting vowel groups and adjusting for silent endings. Estimated words are marked so you know which counts to double-check.

Using it for haiku

A haiku has three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables. Type each line on its own row and compare the line totals.

How to use the syllable counter

  1. Type or paste a word, sentence or poem.
  2. Put each line of a poem on its own row.
  3. Read the total for every line and spot any estimated words marked with an asterisk.

Example: The three lines An old silent pond, A frog jumps into the pond and Splash silence again count as 5, 7 and 5 syllables, the pattern of a haiku.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count syllables in a haiku?

Put each line on its own row. The tool shows a total for each line so you can check for 5, 7 and 5.

Why are some counts marked as estimated?

Those words are not in the pronunciation dictionary, so the tool counts vowel sounds instead. Check them by saying the word aloud.

Does it handle numbers?

No. Write numbers out as words, for example twenty-five.
